I'm renting a car, what are some good roads? What's good for car people to do there?

You really don't want a car in SF, there nowhere to park, and I mean NO WHERE! when you do find one it is outrageously expensive. Just take the BART. It'll get you most places there without too much trouble. If you are leaving the city, then yes, get one otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I was there a few weeks ago! Definitely go down Lombard street and drive through Sausalito (north side of Golden Gate Bridge). We also drove by Tesla's headquarters in Palo Alto which was pretty cool. I didn't realize it at the time, but their factory is across the bay in Fremont (I thought it was in L.A.). If you don't mind an hour drive, definitely go to Laguna Seca. The gates were open when we went and there was a track day going on! We didn't have much time to go looking for good driving roads, but the ones we found were I-280 and Highway 17, which connects San Jose to Santa Cruz.

Agree- take BART and cabs in town. Outa town go drive US1 North or South - either way.
Or take Delta roads to Sacramento - loop over to St Helena, Back via Sonoma....
Or go East to the BlackHawk Museum (cars) in San Ramon.

seriously! Sf is NOT Jalop friendly. Having a car in that town is a bit of a curse and help explains why the ride sharing apps came from that city. I can recommend plenty of good driving roads outside SF, but none in the city except maybe the embarcadero on a stellar day

This guy thinks it's Jalop friendly. There was a Cayenne Turbo S in the street as well.

Not much in SF itself. If you have some time, just head over and take Highway 1 South.

When are you arriving? If you're arriving this week, the Auto Show is in town. It's the usual generic 2015s, but the local enthusiasts usually have a hall or two for themselves. Still, it's a good way to spend $7.
Driving in SF is not really as bad as most people make it sound, and it's actually a necessity when you're out west. There's two particular blocks that aren't fun to drive in: 4th between Howard and Folsom and the shit show that is New Montgomery.
Other than the usual racetracks and tourist sights, you should definitely try the coastal roads. The drive out to Pacifica and Santa Cruz can be done entirely on PCH and the views are amazing. If you find yourself in Napa, take CA Rd. 121/128 around Lake Berryessa. It's a pretty fun day trip.

Highway 1 or whatever it is that goes along the coast. Never been there but my dad was stationed in the Monteray Bay area at Ford Ord during Vietnam and always raves about how epic that road is. He had the proper car for good roads then too, a MGB GT
Avoid San Francisco proper. No good driving there.

I went to Oakland last August and stopped at Fantasy Junction in Emeryville and the Blackhawk Auto Museum in Danville. Cool finds at both places. I'm not sure how much further SF is though

Moss Beach Distillery. Its an okay restaurant, but:
1. It's about 30 -45 minutes from SFO
2. It's haunted
3. Its by the beach with beautiful views
4. Its a nice drive across the San Andreas fault and then by the Pacific Ocean

Take Skyline Blvd south, stop for lunch at Alice's, then Highway 9 down into Santa Cruz. Once in Santa Cruz, definitely visit Canepa Design (oppo heaven, Google it) in Scott's Valley. If you've got the time, drive down Highway 1 to Monterey/Carmel/Laguna Seca.

Best "driving" roads are north of the bridge. Plenty of good mountain roads in Marin County and sausulito but they can be clogged with tourists. If you are looking for unclogged, twisty mountain roads, go up into Napa or Sonoma.

It may have been longer than an hour. We stopped in Monterrey, so I was just guessing how long it would take if you went on 101 or didn't stop.

It's closer to 2. But stopping in Monterey is a great idea.

Aha! Well, I definitely read something wrong then. Which is good, cause I'd love to drive down it myself someday. :-)
